Ludwig van Beethoven, known as the greatest composer of all time, was born around December 16, 1770 in Bonn, Germany, then he was baptized on December 17, 1770. Although his exact birthdate has not been determined, the law at the time stated that all babies had to be baptized within twenty four hours of being born, therefore this would be the most reasonable date of birth. Beethoven was a stubborn man and insisted that this birthdate was incorrect and that he was actually born two years later in 1772, even after all of the official paperwork and birth certificate was made and given to him. Beethoven was the older of two other brothers, Casper who was born in 1774 and Johann who was born in 1776. His mother, Maria Magdalena van Beethoven was a very fragile and moralistic women, while his father, Johann van Beethoven, was a court singer, although he was more known for his alcoholism than any musical ability. In the beginning, Beethoven would stand on a stool to reach the keys of the piano as he cried his way through his time playing, while his father stood behind and beat him for any hesitation or mistakes that he made. He was then locked in a cellar and deprived of sleep in order to get extra hours of practice. It is unknown of the reason that Beethoven was such a talented musician, whether it be his father’s brutal teachings or the lessons he took from organist around town, he eventually became the most talented composer than had even been seen
