Lying is a false statement presented as to being true. There are three main reasons why a human lies: to get out of trouble, to avoid hurting someone or something, and to obtain what one wants. Although we all know those lies lead up to consequences, good or bad. In the play Much Ado About Nothing we see multiple and different ways of lying. Like how Leonato, Claudio, and Don Pedro lied to Benedick to fall for Beatrice. Or how Don John falsely accused Hero of cheating the day before the wedding. Lying is an ongoing theme in this play that changed the course as it progressed.
At the beginning of the play we see young, insecure Claudio fall in love with the beautiful Hero. He says “ In mine yes she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked

Although Beatrice makes it seem like she absolutely despises him and will never date him or marry him. She even said “ I never can see him but I am heart burned an hour after” (2.1.), but was this heartburn a rush of heat going through her body like butterflies in her stomach. Vis versa with Benedick. Leonato, Don Pedro, and Claudio came up with the idea of tricking Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love. As the men were outside planning their lie dear Benedick was contemplating about if he did get married his wife is going to have to be spot on on his discription. Benedick over heard the three men talking about how much Beatrice loves him. Leonato promised it was all true because Hero said so. Lier, Hero never said that. Leonato also talked about how often Beatrice would wake up and not go to sleep until she was done with the letter. By overhearing this Benedick was over thrilled and realized that he did actually too love Beatrice. The same thing happened to Beatrice. She accidently overheard Ursula and Hero talking about how Benedick loves her. This lie was not harming anyone, they lied to get what they wanted, which was to reunite Benedick and Beatrice wanted. One lie that did harm almost every character in this play was the cheating scandal with Hero and
