In the recently published book by Elizabeth Ford, "Sometimes Amazing Things Happen", she related how she ended up as a prison psychiatrist and even though at one time, she had to resign for some time because it was so overwhelming, she went back to it and spent the rest of working years in that position. Her book is not a best of all possible worlds statement but a realistic retelling of her experiences good and bad. She believes that everyone has at its core, a reserve of goodness and that with enough time, proper treatment, she can reach that and try to turn someone life 's around. Not all are success stories.
This week and next week’s writing assignment will be split into two parts based on Eleanor Clarke Slagle’s lecture which examines the lives of those who have endured extraordinary hardships and their ability to rise above. Slagle’s case study poses the question: Who rises above adversity? Most of the data use in her study comes from personal experiences of those who have been faced with terminal illness, abuse, impoverishment, and incarceration. First I would like to provide a brief background on one of the earliest pioneers of occupational therapy. I am the employee that is the first to arrive to work and last to leave, the student who picks up the slack when other group members don’t hold up their end of the assignment, the friend that is always there when you call on them, and the mentor that will do anything to ensure my mentee is always at his/her best. Reflecting all of these attributes is my only weakness; always going above and beyond without reward although it may go unnoticed and sometimes can be exhausting. It is a passion of mine to extend a helping hand to others and watch others grow to reach their full potential as I have. Hopefully, I will be that Residential Assistant that residents feel that they can call on whether I am on or off the clock.
