Tragic heroes are destined for a downfall, which is what makes them a “tragic” hero. A tragic hero is usually great, and respected by not only his followers but by everyone. A tragic hero can also lose everything he has worked so hard to get. His downfall is because of a bad judgements or a serious of bad decisions like Macbeth. The downfall usually happens at the characters high point. Macbeths high point came because of his lust for power which created his downfall. Macbeth’s lust for power leads him to murder his cousin and king, Duncan. Duncan was a great king and Macbeth a loyal general. King Duncan never thought that his most loyal general and cousin would turn on him in such a way. Macbeth does not only want to be a general, but the king. The trio of witches feed Macbeths lust for power by saying “all hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of cawdor!/ all hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”(1.2.49 50). The witches fool Macbeth and tell him it is his fate to be king. So Macbeth and his wife plan and do go through with the murder of King Duncan. The three evil and ugly witch’s tell Macbeth of what could be for a certain price. That price was not so small in the end. The ultimate price was the life of Macbeth itself. Macbeth believed the witch’s not because they were telling the truth but because they told Macbeth what he wanted to hear. He was to blind from his own ambition. To blind to see what was standing right in front of him, to blind to see the monster he would become. Macbeth never seen that the witches are playing him like a puppet. In the end they build his ego so big, he thinks he cannot be killed be a man born of a woman. That there shows an inevitable downfall of the ready to be king,
