The Tragedy of Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy about a man named Macbeth. He receives a prophecy on the battlefield that foretells that he will be king and it drives him crazy to try to make the fortune come true and he hurts and kills many people in the process. Macbeth tries to bury the past by making it seem like the dagger killed the king and not him. He also rejects the image of Banquo, his best friend being king and not him. Macbeth is feeling very guilty about having to take an innocent life, so his mind is altering what he sees and makes it seem like the dagger killed the king and not Macbeth. “Thou art like the spirit of the Banquo. Down to the sands! Thy crown does sear mine eyelids and thy hair, Thou other gold bound brow, I'd like the first.” (Macbeth, IV, I, 112-114 ) When Macbeth went to the witches cave to see them for the second time he was shown an image of Banquo being king and showing future lineage under him too. Macbeth rejects this and it shows how far he has gone from his true self and now he will not accept the witches vision. Macbeth actively tries to control the future by seeking out the witches for the second time in a dark cavern and by killing Fleance and Banquo. “ By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes” (Macbeth, IV, I, 44-45). As Macbeth approaches the cave that the witches reside in, one of them says that something wicked this way comes and this is very significant because it is the first time that Macbeth is called
