Is it justifiable to kill in order to get revenge and peace? The death of Matt and Ruth’s son, Frank altered their lives. Losing their son put them in a dark place taking an enormous toll over their profound emotions. The hatred for Richard Strout, grew stronger daily. The story “Killings” Author Andre Dubus displayed disputes with the values of compassion, courage, and fairness.
The Reign of Terror was ultimately unjust because the promises for a democracy were put to the side due to a desire for power. It was inhumane to murder a colossal amount of people based on accusations and from being blinded from greediness. The Reign of Terror stripped the people of humanity for they were killed ruthlessly and thrown out of the people’s lives without thought. “[The king’s] blood flowed and cries of joy from eighty thousand armed men struck my ears… I saw
Our society is so busy deciding what is or is not just, that no one has taken a second to actually figure out how to define it. Justice is a result that is rightly deserved. It’s a consequence, and like all consequences, it can be good or bad. Justice gives and takes and yet no one can agree on what justice is. The ones who decide what justice means, are the people in power.
2 Machiavelli?s Views of Commoners and Nobility Delena Leann Burchfield University of the Cumberlands LEAC 834: Leadership in Historical Context Dr. Michael B. Colegrove March 13, 2023 Machiavelli's Views of Commoners and Nobility ? ? ? ? ? ? Niccol? Machiavelli was an Italian diplomat who work for Prince Cesare Borgia. Machiavelli wrote the handbook for princes called The Prince. Machiavelli's name became synonymous with evil because of his cruel views on how a prince should act.
People are often served with unjust punishments for crimes they commit. This pattern is seen in multiple plays where a character is undeservedly given a punishment for a warranted crime. One of these plays is Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In the play, Romeo’s decision to kill Tybalt was justified and did not deserve the punishment he received.
If 18 year olds are old enough to vote or fight and die for their country, then they should be able to drink alcohol. [McCardell] believes that alcohol is a fixture in the lives of young people and suggests, instead of trying to outlaw it, America should consider policies the will “empower” eighteen-to-twenty-year olds to make mature decisions about it. In the early 1970s, most states raised the drinking age at 21 since that was the voting age at that time. From 1969 to 1976, some 30 states lowered their purchase ages, generally to 18. This happened because the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1971 with the 26th amendment that was passed with the congress of the united states to amid increasing support for a constitutional amendment.
He said that one must find the perfect balance of generosity, mercy and honesty, coupled with greed, cruelty and deceit in order to be successful. He believed that it is better to be loved and feared, but knew that if you can only have one, it should be fear, “…it would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved” (Machiavelli 61). Machiavelli is perhaps the very personification of “the end justifies the means” in that he believed a strong and balanced prince could do what is necessary to ultimately end barbarism. However, this is an idea I argue Socrates would disagree with.
We can’t run a society where we tell people to not kill people and then kill them for killing people because it is improper and immoral. Widely accepted as it is, vengeance is not justice and it doesn’t represent any of the core values of the term justice. As mentioned with The Crucible, the accusers aren’t always telling the truth and the accused aren’t always guilty. That’s what our justice system is based on. Innocent until proven guilty.
Revenge is justifiable when one’s retaliatory act is equal in magnitude to the offense that one suffered. The offense and the act of revenge must be proportionate, like the eye for an eye in Hammurabi’s Code. The offense must also be a heinous act that causes mental or physical trauma, in order to warrant revenge. When one takes revenge on a wrongdoer, one is serving justice to the offender and punishing the offender. The punishment must suit the crime.
In The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli, an Italian philosopher, and politician, writes about his views on human nature, politics, and leadership. Machiavelli states that commoners and nobility are in natural conflict, with the nobility wanting to control and oppress commoners and the commoners trying to avoid oppression. How Machiavelli viewed commoners and nobility reflects the political climate of 16th-century Italy and has significantly impacted the study of leadership theory and practice, even today. His observations in Renaissance Italy shaped his views on commoners and nobles and how power is acquired and used as a ruler. This paper will discuss Machiavelli's views on commoners and nobility and how these may affect leadership styles.
In society, the biggest moral taboo a man can commit is the act of murder. As such, many law codes and religions treat murderers with the highest form of punishment (Capital punishment in the United States, the Mark of Cain in the Bible etc.). However, in some situations it is right to kill people because it can prevent a person from causing harm to society, and can prevent a person who is ill from further suffering. There are some people in history who actively seek to disrupt the well being of their own society; therefore, in many of these cases the act of execution is justified.
The contemporary world has been referred to by many names. The modern age is considered to be the age of information or the age of technology. Though these different names do not define the Zeitgeist of today’s world, they all point to main cultural functions that can be observed and seen. The spirit of the times of today’s world is the idea of selfish individualism, or ego. Machiavelli states that human nature is cruel and self-interested.
I would like to have dinner with the philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli. I would like to speak to him personally because I want to challenge his ideas. Machiavelli believes that politicians are not bad for being mean. He thinks politicians should be strict, cruel and feared. The reason is because Machiavelli believes in theory that if a politician is nice and loved by everyone then people will take advantages.
From the four corners of the Earth have come different thinkers all searching for one answer - the riddle of the human mind and the quintessence of life. People began thinking outside the box. People began wanting to know the reason for coming into being. Hundreds of ideas rose up and brought out the age of reason, the Enlightenment. The result was an explosion of ideas conflicting and agreeing with each other coming from philosophers.
According to Machiavelli, a prince who keeps his promises is generally praised. But history demonstrates that most success is achieved when princes are crafty, tricky and able to deceive others. A prince can fight or succeed by using law or by using force. The use of law comes naturally to men and the use of force comes naturally to beasts. Hence, to achieve success, the prince must learn to fight with a balance between both law and force.
