Through Millard’s description and through the DSM-V, a resource used by psychiatrists for diagnoses of mental disorders, I think that Guiteau had Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He meets the criteria for this disorder. He has a grandiose sense of self-importance, as Millard shows with Guiteau believing himself as “God’s minute man”. He is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success and power as he wants attention, fame, and money constantly. He has a sense of entitlement; in Destiny of the Republic, he thought he was owed the Paris consulship as he “obviously” was the only reason Garfield won the election. He showed arrogant and haughty behaviors. Guiteau is described by many others in Millard’s book as being very arrogant and was very arrogant in his belief that General Sherman would come to break him out of prison.
