In Elie Wiesel’s acceptance speech of 1986 he stated that “when human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must –at that moment – become the center of the universe.” Considering the events that occurred in World War I, such as the Holocaust, I strongly agree with Wiesel’s statement about making those who are endangered our priority. It is the duty of those who inhabit this world to protect and set the imprisoned free regardless the circumstances. If no one has the courage to step up and do something to help, the oppressor will end up believing that treating people unjustly and forbid them from their freedom is indeed right.
In the memoir Night, the narrator Elie Wiesel recounts a moment when the ss officers were transporting all the prisoners from buna to another camp and whenever somebody couldn’t keep running the ss officers shoot them. “They had orders to shoot anyone who couldn’t sustain the peace”(Wiesel 85). The ss officers cruelty to the prisoners led them to give up, they stopped trying. If someone stopped and the officers didn’t noticed, he would probably die under the feet of all the people behind them. As the author describes his experiences, many other examples of inhumanity are revealed.
Buergenthal tells a story that is not similar to Elie Wiesel, although they tell of the same event. This book is not intended to expose the horrors of the camps, but to rather show how a child was able to conquer all those horrors and come out on the other side, willing to stand up for anything that seems unjust. It is because of people like Thomas Buergenthal that violations of human rights are taken more seriously than ever, which is expected. From beginning to end, it is inspiring and allows the true resiliency of all children to shine
Wiesel must take it upon himself to ensure such human suffering is not repeated, that his warning will be heard and the world will take action. As he speaks about the horrors of the Holocaust, he makes sure to establish that “the world did know and remained silent”-- it was not ignorance that cost millions of lives, but apathy; silence. He continues, telling the listener “we must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

During the early through mid 1940s an event called the Holocaust would plague the European nation where a group of called the “Nazis” would imprison six million Jews, 5 million of them being prisoners of War (The National World War Two Museum). One prisoner named Elie Wiesel would recount his experience going through the Holocaust in his book “Night.” In this book he would show a general theme of Under the most horrifying circumstances, human beings will show tremendous strength, courage, and compassion. As Wiesel gives his speech before receiving his Nobel Peace Prize, he places responsibility on the people who witnesses the Holocaust yet remained silent when he states, “Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the world remain silent?” Millions of Jews were burned, beaten, and starved for years without people talking about it. Mothers, sons, uncles, sisters, children, lives all silenced because people were either afraid or ignorant. In addition to the community outside of these horrific places there were also citizens in these countries who also continued to watch in muteness, some also contributing to the suffering of the Jews.
When the story of a horrific tragedy is reported on the news, Americans may feel remorseful, but only temporarily. The thought is pushed quickly out of the mind as they are consumed with other, less important things. Rather than donating to charity, volunteering, or giving aid to the homeless, humanity looks on. This is not a recent development; Americans have been immune to tragedies since before World War II. Elie Wiesel, a man who has become a human’s rights activist after spending two years in Buchenwald and Auschwitz at age fifteen, spoke at the White House about The Perils of Indifference during the 1999 Millennium Lecture series.
When looking at the Holocaust, most people agree that it was atrocious and one of the worst marks on the history of our planet. However, what they don’t realize is why people did not help those in need. As it turns out, there were valid reasons why change did not occur. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, these thoughts are explored as the main character, Liesel, learns about her country.
