Mae Carol Jemison: One of the greatest explorers When people think of famous scientists and astronauts they think Neil Armstrong and Albert Einstein. Though Jemison’s name doesn’t come to light, she was one of the greatest scientist and astronauts of the 21st century. Jemison made many huge accomplishments such as, being the first African- American to go into space and creating the Earth We Share program, helping children and adults keep the world clean and safe.
Jemison’s early life and education greatly impacted her accomplishments and her career as a successful scientist and astronaut. She was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, but later moved to Chicago (Carol 1,400). “She attended the Stanford University on a national Achievement Scholarship and received a B.S. in chemical engineering and a B.A. in Afro-American studies in 1977” (Carol 1,400). From 1983 to 1985 Dr. Jemison was the area Peace Corps medical officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia (“Carol Jemison”). “On September 12, 1992 Jemison became the first African-American to in space on the space ship Endeavor, serving as the science specialist” (Carol 1,400). During the flight Jemison studied the effects of weightlessness on her crew and herself. After retiring from NASA in 1993 she founded the Jemison Group, an advanced technologies research and consulting firm the same year (Carol 1,400). In 1998 she was awarded the science and technology award given by Essence Magazine. “In 1999 Jemison formed the Bio Sentient Corporation, a medical technology devices and service company focused on improving health and human performance through physiologic awareness and self-regulation” (Jemison 1,400).
