Exploring The Potential Of The Maglev Train Industry

752 Words4 Pages

Maglev trains are the technological breakthrough the 21 st century transport

required. To keep up with the fast and unlimited demand of the global world,

transportation methods need to be constantly updated. One of the greatest

accomplishments of the Industrial Revolution in18th century Europe was the steam

engine. The steam engine revolutionized transport. However, now with increasing

population, costs, less space, and environmental issues, the current technology has

become outdated and inefficient. Science constantly advances and there has been

found a possible solution for all these shortcomings. The Maglev train. Maglev train

briefly described, works on a combination of basic physics principles of

electromagnetic propulsion.

Now let’s talk about the

commercial potential of the train. Though the technology behind these trains was

known for a long time, people only came to realize the true potential of this

technology in the 2000's and now countries like China, Japan and South Korea have

their own commercial Maglev trains. The Maglev train has many positives when

compared to the conventional train system. Firstly Maglev is much faster and cheaper

than its predecessors. Maglev trains in Japan have reached top speeds of up to 500

km/h. Then, “Maglev operating costs will be only 3 cents per passenger mile and 7

cents per ton mile, compared to 15 cents per passenger mile for airplanes, and 30

cents per ton mile for express busses.” Secondly, Maglev's are very energy efficient

compared to any other mode of transportation. Furthermore, the technology is a big

win for environmentalists, as it emits no pollution. Apart from the usual use of

Maglev for transporting passenger, the train has other applications, like the big

market for cargo transportation in the United States. Maglev trains can be used for

transporting other products and heavy objects other than people which would result
