Elie Wiesel and Larry Itliong, both led extremely remarkable lives. Their work helped change the world for the good of the people. There are many people in the world that have made a difference. Every person alive, that has been alive, and will be born, will have an effect on the world in one way or another. Two people that have affected the world are Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian antiwar activist, and Chris McCandless, from the true novel Into the Wild. These two may have affected the world differently, but when their actions and stories are put together, a whole is created.
During the Progressive Era Jane Addams and W.E.B. Bois were very influential individuals, Addams helped improve women’s rights and those in poverty by co-finding Chicago’s Hull House while Bois helped the progression of African Americans by fighting for equal rights. Addams and Bois were among the most influential people in the Progressive Era reforms. Jane Addams is known as the mother of social work because the fought for the rights of minority groups. She was also a leader of women suffrages and she fought for world peace. She helped focus on issues that were of concern to mothers, such as the well-being and needs of children, local public health and world peace.
Margaret Sanger helped people become more educated on birth control. Freedom of the people was taught and encouraged by Alphonse Gabriel Capone. Greta Garbo influenced and enhanced the way actresses were portrayed in theatre. All of these people have made for a better society to live in.
Overall from all the readings that were given, a clear message was being told. That message was that neither side wins. In Mark Twain’s “The Prayer”, he makes it seem like war is glorious, but it shouldn’t be glorified when war itself is horrific. He explains a war prayer that was being told then finishes off the story by saying, “It was believed afterward that the man was a lunatic, because there was no sense in what he said (3)”. It was clear that the man making the prayer to the patriots of war was claiming that he is sending a message from god and that god is amongst them.
Throughout her life time, Jane Addams helped change the Progressive Era for the better. Jane Adams committed her entire life to helping the poor. She did this, however, in a unique way. She created a program in order to help immigrate the poor into a regular American society. She also was an active advocate for women’s suffrage.
There have been many people that have had major contributions to the world. Toussaint L'Ouverture and Mohandas Gandhi were some people that both had a large impact to their respective regions. In the case of Toussaint L'Ouverture he was a Haitian slave from the country of Haiti. He escaped in a sudden slave revolt. He was educated by his godfather Pierre Baptiste.
Though he was jailed many times, he persisted to strike out against what he believed to be injustice. One of Gandhi’s most memorable lines, “noncooperation with evil is as much a duty as is cooperation with good”, thoroughly highlights his philosophy of nonviolently refusing to cooperate with injustice. Though most of our early activists were male figures, Susan B. Anthony was an exception. Born into a Quaker family with strong beliefs for social reform, Anthony followed in the footsteps of her father and elder siblings and became a successful social activist for her time. She played a pivotal role in the women's suffrage movement and anti-slavery campaigns.
Was Malcolm Muggeridge biased towards Mother Teresa or was he impartial, reporting on her life as an onlooker? Although Malcolm had plenty of reasons for writing Mother Teresa’s biography, he was biased towards her for the following reasons; he became saved because of her, he became extremely involved in her life, and he became extremely involved in her ministry, none of which were necessary for him to write a biography. Malcolm Muggeridge was biased towards Mother Teresa because he became saved. Normally, a reporter reports, publishes his report, and then repeats.
I nominate Jane Addams to receive the humanitarian award based on her teaching, environmental justice, community building, and child advocacy. September 1889, she bought a run-down mansion, named Hull-House, in Chicago to house her experimental effort to aid in the solution of social and industrial problems within a city. Hull-house contained many life changing opportunities for men, women, children, and immigrants; including English classes, medical services, and lectures. Have you ever seen a peaceful protest or something that helped everyone and not just one person? Well, that is what Mahatma Gandhi and Jane Addams did. Mahatma Gandhi peacefully protested against the South Africans and the Indians. Jane Addoms helped everyone by inspiring a building that everyone could meet up in. Mahatma Gandhi peacefully protested for the Indians to be let free from the French.
There is never a lack of people who want to make a difference in the world however there are very few who have the confidence to take action. Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust survivor he suffered because people didn't care to take action; they were indifferent to his plight. Wiesel now stands before the nation that saved him and his message is stop indifference. Being grateful for life is what makes us human, however as Wiesel describes there are times where people choose to be emotionless. Wiesel resents indifference because it isolates one from the world and leaves others helpless.
Sometimes, people don’t want to ; they would rather blend into their surroundings. I believe in standing up for what you believe in, and sticking out of the crowd to make a point. Individuals that follow their beliefs go on to make world-changing movements. For example, Gandhi led a peaceful protest because of the unfair laws that were being forced upon people at that time. He believed that he could make an impact on the world with his anti-violence actions.
There is a lady in the area that I live who is making a difference. This lady name is Betty chin and she is known locally and nationally for making a difference. She has met the president when he gave her an award for her work. Locally she is known as the lady that helps the homeless.
