ENGAGING OTHERS WITH LEADERSHIP 2 Effective leaders are those that can lead with fairness and are able to engage the staff and align their goals with those of the organization for which they work. Those in leadership positions are tasked with motivating a group of people with different ideas, attitudes, and personalities. Having an engaged staff has shown to lead to greater staff satisfaction, patient satisfaction and lower turnover rates. While it may be difficult to bring a group of people together and align their goals with the organization, leading diverse groups can also be positive in that new ideas and approaches can be brought to the team. The main attitudes from the team members are ones that lack respect for not only the leader, but for other members of the team as well. This section will critically evaluate the team from the scenario for their ability to handle differences, maintaining team order, communication, and team cohesiveness. Ability to Handle Differences The team members display a general lack of respect for each other as noted by the physician talking down to clinical staff, failure to recognize other staff for their individuality and expertise. What should be viewed as a diverse team is what will bring different ideas to the table; their attitudes toward each other are counter-productive to the goal of collectively agreeing on policy changes. The members of this team are unable to effectively communicate in respectable manner and allow their differences to break down the lines of communication. The scenario showed obvious team dysfunction and one cause is the blatant disrespect the team members had for one another. When team members show respect to one another there is a sense of inclusion, and being valued (Ellemers, Sleebos, Stam, & De Gilder, 2013.The first action to take in fostering a team with multiple generations is to be able to understand the differences and recognize that each generation can bring different strengths to the group (Phillips, 2016). A second action to take to foster teams with multiple generations is communication. “Trust, respect, and empathy are three components needed for effective communication” (Phillips, 2016, p. 198). Being able to embrace the different generations by understanding where they are coming from, and having positive, respectful, communication are key when working with multigenerational teams. Another thing to consider is working with multidisciplinary teams and what can be done to foster those teams. One action to take to foster multidisciplinary teams is to be able to understand the importance of each role played and what it means to the task at hand (Hand et al., 2013). As a leader it is important to “understand the dynamic of the team, be able to support and encourage the team while also helping others develops in to team players” (Hand et al., 2013). Another
