The United States in the 1900’s was very so similar to Pakistan and Afghanistan. Women were not to be educated and could not have jobs. Women were only supposed to stay in the household and they were supposed to cook, clean, and take care of the children. The men were supposed to go to work and provide money for the family. This is not a form of injustice, however the fact that women were not allowed to vote or do things the men could do was a form of injustice, in the United States and in Pakistan. Malala says, “I was a girl in a land where rifles are fired in celebration of a son, while daughters are hidden away behind a curtain, their role in life simply to prepare food and give birth to children”. A subculture is a culture within a culture or a group that specific people belong to. For example, the Taliban consist of a group of individuals who strongly believe in the Muslim community. Everyone who is in the Taliban belongs to the subculture, Taliban. Also, the Taliban has different norms and different values than the individuals that remain in the Pakistan society.
According to Essentials of Sociology in- groups are, “a group toward which one feels particular loyalty and respect—the group to which we belong”(135). The in-group in this specific situation would be everyone in the Pakistan community, while the out-group would be the woman in the society. The in-group also includes the Taliban. In the United States, many males are sexist and many females are sexist. In Pakistan, the Taliban are the individuals that sexist. Essentially, they believe that women are pointless and men are the only individuals who should be able to do anything in the world. They are the ones who have made laws prohibiting that women are allowed to attend school. Women in Afghanistan are extremely scared and full of fear to do anything against the Taliban. The Taliban also has control over women and their rights to their health. The Taliban has many rules that the Afghanistan community must follow. Men also have rules and regulations that they have to follow, as well as the children.
Malala was a huge inspiration to many young adults and teenagers; because she was extremely brave and stood up for her rights even though she knew the Taliban would target her. She took risks after the Taliban shot her, and still tried to inform women on their equal rights. This book relates to sociology in so many ways, because it discusses the importance of women rights, injustice, inequality, sexism, and segregation. It also has aspects of sociology such as in-groups, out-groups, and subcultures. Social injustice has always been a common aspect around the world that has been extremely threatening
