Chloe Lathim Mrs. Henderson 1965 March 20, 2018 1965 You’re in 1965, it’s late February, a group at your school is coming up with a plan to change the U.S. forever. Are you going to help? Or are you going to keep things how they are? or as long as the U.S. has been around racial discrimination has been a thing. In 1965 a lot of things to change that happened, but a lot of things that would keep it alive for many years to come happened too. The Malcolm X Murder created a roar of hysteria against the white and the Klu Klux Klan, The Voting Rights March for the colored happened and that sent people into happiness, The Watts Riots happened and that made people so mad they killed and destroyed everything. Step-brothers Marquette and Ronald Frye were pulled over by a white highway patrol officer, just a few blocks from their house. Marque (the driver) was asked to complete a test for drunk driving, he failed. Marquette was to be arrested and he knew it, however instead of accepting his fate Marquette fought back. A fight between the officer and Marquette broke out, Ronald Frye reacted badly and jumped in to back-up his brother. A crowd began forming and back-up officers were called. The crowd was presumed violent, even though they weren’t at the time. Now, you might not think you should care about what happened 53 years ago, but you should. When you turn 18 you have the right to vote. If you are a medium to dark skin color, if The Voting Rights March of 1965 didn’t happen then maybe you wouldn’t be able to, you would be stuck with whatever the mass of white men decided on and you woud have to take it. Even if you as white as can be you still should care because if any of the events of 1965 didn’t happen you would still be in the era of putting down any colored person, you’re race would still be belittling anyone else.
