WHO PERPETRATED THE SYDNEY SEIGE AND WHAT WAS IT?
The perpetrator behind the Sydney siege was Man Haron Monis directly. Australia thought of him as an “Iranian-born cleric/Muslim priest.” (www.wsj.com) Man Monis was aged 49, and was very well known by police within Australia. He moved to Australia as a refugee from Iran, and was accepted into Australia as he fooled the government to think that he was an “Iranian spy, and would be in danger if he got sent home” (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2897403) Man Monis has been faced with numerous charges including “22 counts of aggravated sexual assault and 14 counts of aggravated indecent assault-and had been bailed for allegedly being an accessory to the killing of his former wife” (according

Man Haron Monis is Muslim. He was trying to warn the Australian government not to interfere with ISIS by sending troops over to fight. He did this by the hostage taking situation. His aim was to get a phone call with Tony Abbot (prime minister) but under Australian law, Australians do not associate with terrorists. A social studies concept that relates to this crime is BELIEFS. Man Monis held his own certain beliefs and stuck to them very strongly. He expressed these beliefs in the Siege, as the beliefs shaped him and his actions to do what he did. Another social studies concept that relates to this is GOVERNMENT. People within the country believe that the government had something to do with the Siege, which allows people in the community to question the authorities and their actions towards certain issues such as this. This can be related to the strain theory. The strain theory is what a group/person is overwhelmed by a problem, which leads to them committing a crime. Jihadism is a sub belief “referring to a religious duty of Islam” (Wikipedia.org).They are an extremist group and hold a very strong set of beliefs which are easily influenced onto other individuals. They believe in the ancient Muslim teachings (script of ideas) which are over 1400 years old in which Al-Qaida previously followed during their time of terrorism. They believe in Muhammad and believe that all Muslims should convert to Caliphate. This is a reason for his acts of terrorism and inhuman crimes as they would have influenced him and shaped his beliefs and values due to their strong will for what they believe in.
