In human nature its normal to have a tendency to change due to the effect of events in our lives. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare demonstrates this nature through Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. In the play, the characters become like the other over the course of the play due to each other’s involvements in their dangerous actions. In certain situations, there are moments that define the true motives of these two characters. The traits of manipulation, power struggle and guilt, eventually switch between the characters as the play progresses. The reversal of these traits come from situations that they got themselves into, coming from their dark decisions.

It is in this quote that Lady Macbeth stresses her power over Macbeth and twists his arm to do her doing. She forces his own manliness against him and makes him feel weak for not wanting to carry out the murder. In the quote the lines “When you durst do it, then you are a man”. Lady Macbeth made it clear that if, and only if, he commits the murder he will prove is manliness. When she is doing this it’s simple to see that Lady Macbeth is only doing this for personal gain, using Macbeth like a pawn.

This type of manipulation that is shown from Lady Macbeth is directly mirrored into Macbeth actions later in the play. He uses to same tactic of using the emotions of the murders to get his way: "...Know / That it was he, in the times past, which held you / So under fortune, ..." In this quote the way of manipulation is almost identical to what Lady Macbeth did to him. Macbeth states that they are entitled to a higher rank but Banquo has held them back. He convinces them that Banquo is the reason for their failure and he has miss leaded them in their lives. He later states “We are men, my liege”, challenging that they are honorable and courageous and surly as men they can carry out this task.
