“The Blood Stained Banders” is an African American spiritual sung by Blind Jimmie Strothers. Strothers was a banjo and guitar player who was blinded by an explosion at the mines that he worked at. After being convicted of murdering his wife with an axe, he was sent to the state penitentiary. There, he was found by Alan Lomax and Harold Spivacke who were working on finding field recordings for the Library of Congress. They recorded multiple songs sung by Strothers, among which is “The Blood Stained Banders”, an original composition.
The Madison Scouts are the epitome of a marching band. The longest running “official” marching band in existence has a very long history. They however were and continue to be very successful in the drum corp world. Winning multiple world and DCI championships, The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps continues to be the only strong male Drum Corp in existence. It was in the depression year of 1938 that a group of Madison, Wisconsin, businessmen attended a Racine Scouts performance and forthwith decided that Madison needed its own drum corps.
The two stories, Drumbeats and Bullets and The Drummer Boy of Shiloh have many comparisons and contrasts. One story is mostly fact based, while the other is more of a story. Both stories have facts about the life in war as a drummer boy. Johnny Clem (from Drumbeats and Bullets) and Joby (from The Drummer boy of Shiloh) can relate in many different ways.they also have factors that make them very different.
Have you ever walked into 1,200 guns aiming straight at you? Drummer boys in the Civil War have, some even did it more than once. Drummer boys, who also served as soldiers, were some of the bravest boys in the country during the Civil War. These boys walked at the front of the marching column beating their drums to regulate soldiers’ marching steps. They were also the first ones to be shot if there was an ambush.
This essay introduced the development of New Orleans brass band writing with an emphasis on the consolidation of the tradition and style. Brass bands ingested components of prevalent music that stimulated their musical legacy, and made the genre well known with people throughout the world. The Rebirth Brass Band started an insurgency in New Orleans music through their recordings and tours. They enlivened groups like the Jonathan Batiste's Stay Human Band. Rebirth's Brass Band music enlivened them to convey street music to gatherings of people and were roused by the innovative bass lines got from R&B and funk.
There were a lot of people in attendance at this game with which I spoke who said that they come to the games, whether they be home or away, to see and hear the Highlander Marching Band perform both pep tunes and their halftime performance. While many of these people that I talked to were friends and relatives of the band members, there were a few who really had no affiliation with the band whatsoever. I took the time to speak with these people who were there for the band, and relatives answered with things like "My son plays trumpet and has a solo during halftime!" or "My daughter is a senior, and I want to see her perform as many times as I can this year!". However, those who really did not have affiliation with the band gave me some more
The time is now. The roaring crowd settled, the stadium lights shined above us, the field was set. It was time to show the audience how much dedication, sweat, and tears were put in the show right before the eyes. The masterpiece, I like to call it. The hardest part however, is making it seem so effortlessly.
Marching band; copious amounts of people scoff at the sound of those words. I often hear students commenting on how easy marching band is, how we don’t train like the football players do. At Anderson High School, that’s not the case, the marching band trains for just as long. As a band of over 125 individuals, it takes determination, pride, and confidence to achieve the goals we have set forth to accomplish. As a leader of the saxophone section, I know what it’s like to face failure, to overcome and turn it into success and to march on with confidence.
were the flues followed by the clarinets, the saxophones, the trumpets, trombones, and drums. What has called my attention from this marching band is that almost all the players are girls. There are 12 boys, and 20 girls in this band. Their uniform was also different from the two preceding bands, the Baclkcats uniform has a more military style, with a turtle-neck, black and yellow jacket and black pants. The SIUC Equestrian team was also in the parade, it was a group of people walking, some of them were wearing the same long-sleeve shirt.
To the average person, the high school marching band is nothing more than a bunch of geeks that play during half time at the football games or monopolize the benches by the band hall, but to me, it is so much more. To me it is a family, a safe haven, a creative outlet, a home. I have been involved in marching band for three years, going on four, and I wouldn 't trade the experience for anything. When I entered high school as a scared and awkward freshman, I immediately had three hundred people that I could rely on. The program quickly became like a second home to me and opened up a whole new path in my life.
I know that memorizing your sets and playing a song is somewhat easy, but spending so much time with the same people can be exhausting. A large chunk of summer is filled with band, and we work a lot, but we become really close with the people we got to march with, and it is a great experience. I think a Drum Major gets to see all of this from a perspective that almost no other student gets to see it from. For the fall of 2017, I have no major plans.

Easy to encounter, not so easy to overcome, failures claw at hopes and successes. They bring down those who are weak enough to let them in. They strengthen those that can get past them. I got past one that almost ruined my chances for new opportunities.
Joining band had an immense and almost immediate impact on my life. Before being in band I had never had a talent that I felt completely confident in. I enjoyed practicing and spent many hours trying to improve my musical ability. In
