Mariah Carey is a well known face throughout the world, one main reason being her career as a singer. But what most people don’t know is that she is Afro-Latino, which is why I’m researching her. Another reason for choosing her for this topic is because she greatly impacted the eyes of other afro-latinos, inspiring new singers to keep trying in their career. So let’s start at the beginning of this inspiring singer, and afro-latino. Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York on March 27, 1969 and her name was derived from a song called “They Call the Wind Maria”. During her education, she excelled in performing arts, and was great at singing. When she got to high school she started writing lyrics, and poetry for the fun of it. Until she got to play a part as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. This was when the spark for music lit, and she started her career. Early in Mariah’s career, while she was still doing demo tapes, she ended up getting spotted by a well-known record company, called Columbia Records. After getting spotted, by this big recording company, she ends up making an album with them, which the company promoted around $1 million dollars because they truly believed in her voice. This album ended up reaching Billboard 200, and is how it started her career, because this album gets noticed at the 33rd annual Grammy awards, and Mariah Carey gets an award for Best new artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She then continues to make more albums, to get a better grip on her career.
