What is marijuana? Marijuana also--referred to as weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, and Mary Jane-- is a green, grayish substance that is a mixture of dead and dried plants of Cannabis sativa. Some people smoke it in a water pipe, others smoke it in a rolled cigarette called a joint. This herbal medicine started in Asia around 500 b.c, sooner than later spread to Europe, Africa and the finally the America. Being the most used drug in the world marijuana is not just a substance for a typical “high” but a drug used to cure or help certain diseases like Alzheimer's, Cancer or Aids. With that being said, Marijuana is a substance that has obtained a lot of attention over the last decade. Marijuana being approved by 27 states caused the ongoing debate each year because some feel its a detrimental drug to society, while others feels that a rationalizes your inner thoughts. Roughly, 830,00 people a are in trouble with the law in regards to Marijuana and this number seems to be increasing yearly. Moreover, the US subsidizes around 30 billion a year into the drug war, half of which is dedicated to Marijuana. Many are questioning its success all together. Each year the (DEA) Drug Enforcement Administration come up with different reasons why marijuana is harmful to society. Reasons like causing psychological and mental issues to the brain or the comparison that marijuana is closely related to tobacco. The real question is why is there so much money being invested in putting people behind cells for possession of marijuana. That money could have been funding towards the education system or feeding the less fortunate. The United States as a unit is so focused on how marijuana is hurting the people that they are forgetting how much money is being invested in the wrong area. Government
