Many people have contemplated whether or not recreational marijuana should be legalized for tax purposes. I strongly believe it should not be legalized for many reasons. Marijuana is addictive for some people, with the risk increasing for those who start using it as a teen. It affects certain receptors in the brain, called cannabinoid receptors, which influence many functions, including the brain’s reward system. Over time, this can make it difficult for some people to stop using marijuana even when it’s having negative effects on their lives—this means they have become addicted (Questions about Drugs). I have seen the impact marijuana has had on many people, and I see no good in it. Statistically 69% of Americans believe alcohol is more harmful to a person’s health than marijuana. I would be considered the minority in these statistics. My argument for this situation is marijuana is a hallucinogen, it was made illegal when it was first discovered for a reason, and we can earn tax money elsewhere. Marijuana is a hallucinogen. Tax money can be obtained in many other places throughout the state other than the legalization of recreational marijuana. One way we can raise tax revenue is the legislature work to bring more corporations and businesses to Mississippi. Taxing marijuana is not the only way to earn more money for the state. Many people point out the fact that Mississippi receives more funds from the federal government than any other state. That may be true, but we have made it this far without the tax money from marijuana so we can continue to make it without it.
