As important as education is, I believe that it is equally important that education be utilized for the betterment of society. The goal of education is to prepare an individual for their career, but in addition to this it is an opportunity to gain a broader world perspective. It is individuals like DeRay McKesson, civil rights activist and educator, who exemplify the concept of educating the world for the common good of the people. If given the chance to meet with him, I would be interested to understand his perspective behind the Black Lives Matter movement, and his greater mission as an educator. As an individual from a small, suburban town, I have seen how tradition and close-mindedness has contributed to intolerance of social change.
People should be treated equally regardless of their race. Martin Luther King wanted everyone to be happy and be able to work together. Martin Luther King wanted kids to be able to work together. Violence was not good; it did not help solve problems. Martin Luther King's philosophy made the most sense for America in the 1960s.
