One of the most recognized religious awakenings in the world is the Reformation. Although the Reformation involved throngs of people, there is one man in the reformation that can be seen as the man who started it all. Martin Luther, because of his actions in the Reformation, was widely recognized throughout his life, but few people know what prompted him to do the actions that he did. Luther’s education, family, and his early life all lead to his involvement in the Reformation, making it important for current reformed believers to know about.

Even though the day and the month of his birth is known, the year of his birth is not certain because his mother could not remember it and no baptismal or birth records were created for Martin. On November 11, the day following his birth, Martin was baptized in the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul. It just so happened that the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours occurred on the day of his baptism. This could have been the reason why Hans and Margarette Luther named their son Martin (Lull and Nelson 3).
Martin Luther’s family majorly influenced him to develop into the intellectual man that he continued on to become. As Lull and Nelson state in their book, Martin was born to Hans and Margarette Luther. In his family, Martin lived to be the oldest boy that had survived into adulthood (Lull and Nelson 4).
