Mary Poppins is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. She was a cultural icon. Quoted by P.L. Travers, “we cannot have the extraordinary without the ordinary. Just as the supernatural is hidden in the natural. In order to fly, you need something solid to take off from. It’s not the sky that interests me but the ground. . . . When I was in Hollywood the [script] writers said, surely Mary Poppins symbolizes the magic that lies behind everyday life. I said no, of course not, she is everyday life, which is composed of the concrete and the magic,” (Lawson 161). Mary Poppins continues to this day to influence millions of children. This is the 24th most successful feature film that has ever been released in the United States.

She persevered at being a singer and a star for many decades. Andrews played in many famous films in the 1960’s, especially the very popular children's movie, Mary Poppins. She was the lead role as the magical nanny, and received an Academy Award for best actress. Andrews made her debut in the famous movie, The Sound of Music. Both of these movies were hugely successful and stayed popular throughout the years. Near 1998 Julie had a throat surgery and was never able to sing again, even though prior to having a 4-octave soprano voice. She was well known for her beautiful singing voice in both Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music. Andrews is still alive yet today and the last time she starred in a movie was 2010 in the Tooth
