In a paragraph describe the subject matter of the song “Julie.” The song Julie by Rhiannon Giddens is a song set in the Civil War. It imagines a conversation between a slave called Julie and her mistress as a troop of soldiers approaches them to take Julie. The mistress is trying to convince Julie to stay with her, while this young girl feels the need of escaping from hell in which she lives at as a slave. When the song is coming to an end, it reveals that the mistress had sold Julie’s children to another family. For example, the song says, “Mistress, oh mistress that trunk of gold is what you got when my children you sold”. This explains how bad Julie was being treated and why she wanted to escape from the place she was living at.
