Robert “Matthias” Matthews is an extremely interesting character in the book The Kingdom of Matthias. During the course of the book, Matthias makes a cult that worships him throughout the book and he has people that follow him and makes them believe that he is God. During the eighteen thirties, there were multiple people in the time period that did similar to what Matthias during did in the book. The differences between Matthias and the traditional churches is also seen and evaluated during this time period. Matthias, like other Prophets have before, asked his followers to come with him to an isolated place to worship, but unlike most Prophets, Matthias had his followers purchase his clothes that he wore and all of the supplies that he …show more content…

Matthias was not the only person during the time period, The Second Great Awakening, to have people think that he processed the Holy Spirit inside of himself. Jacob Cochran was one of the people like Matthias during the time period. Cochran believed that he was processed by the Holy Spirit and that whoever he had sex with, that meant that the person had just had sex with God (Fiorini). In the book The Kingdom of Matthias, it says, “Matthias was not just father but the Father, occupied with government and prophecy” (105). Cochran and Matthias had a lot of the same principles on how they had people follow them and how they want the whole world to follow them like their followers do. In the book, it says that “He wore the fine two-edged sword that came from Him who was first and last, and he carried the iron rod with which he would rule the world” (98). Both Matthias and Cochran had people stray away from their old heritage and family traditions to come and follow them. Both men were excellent persuaders and thrived in the time period that they lived in. Both Jacob Cochran and Matthias were masters at getting people to believe in what they had to say. During the Second Great Awakening, people would follow people like Matthias and Cochran because they wanted something to believe in and they were not exactly sure what that was yet, so people who did lead
