The Island of Lost Innocence and Maturity While I was reading, “Lord of the Flies” I vividly remember reflecting on the book. The contrast between the loss of innocence and maturing. When Ralph leaned against the tree and started to daydream about his life back in England, it made me remember that there were times when I would daydream about my life back in the Philippines, the tall building complex that we owned, each family having their own floors. We lived on the fourth floor, my aunt on the third, and my other aunt on the second, with my grandma and my grandpa on the first floor. Just like the boys in the book, I was around their ages 6-12, when they left to go to Canada. My dad left a year before my mom. But when they both left, I was 7, going into Grade 1 was extremely scary. I was on my own for the first time, not having my cousins in the same school anymore, and having different dismissal times and lunch times than my older sisters. I felt like I was alone, and having to do everything on my own was new to me, when my mom and dad used to help me with my homework, studying for big finals, remembering my multiplication tables, and having someone to back me up whenever me, my siblings, and my cousins were bickering. Everything was vastly different, with my nanny and grandma. I had to do a lot of my homework and study alone, and I also had to stand up for myself, which was very difficult on my part. I had to set a good example for my little brother and my cousins who were younger than me, just like Ralph did for the little ones, I had to be studious, and I had to stand up for myself, looking back at it now, I can see that for someone at the age of 7-8 years old, I was highly independent, and hated when other people would try to help me.
