Ninoska arrived from Dominican Republic 4 months ago and stated that she is having problems adapting to the United States. Youth reported that she misses her friends, school, relatives, her house and relatives. Youth complained that she never wanted to come to the US but that her mother obligated her because she got separated from her stepfather. She also added that because she does not speak English, classes at school are very difficult and that she is getting stress and insecure about her grades. Youth lives in a small apartment only with her mother, they have no relatives on this country and very few friends.
Very few, if any, immigrants have the chance to learn English before traveling to the U.S. Because of this barrier, it is nearly impossible for organizations such as the Border Patrol to warn, aid, and communicate with them as they travel to the U.S. Although there are helpful signs along the border, they are written in English and are therefore indecipherable. Furthermore, the language border hinders an immigrant’s ability to survive in American society once they arrive. English is the written and spoken language in almost every city, thwarting immigrants’ opportunity to find jobs and interact with others. As they struggle to communicate, they become ostracized and do not fit in.
Richard Rodriguez and Gloria Anzaldúa are two authors who both immigrated to America in the 1950s and received first hand experience of the assimilation process into American society. During this time, Rodriguez and Anzaldúa had struggled adjusting to the school system. Since understanding English was difficult, it made adjusting to the American school system increasingly difficult for Rodriguez. Whereas Anzaldúa, on the other hand, had trouble adjusting to America’s school system due to the fact that she didn’t wish to stop speaking Spanish even though she could speak English. Both Rodriguez and Anzaldúa had points in their growing educational lives where they had to remain silent since the people around them weren’t interested in hearing them speaking any other language than English.
The magnificent Maya are known for some of the most important human achievements in the history of the world. The Maya were a large group of people that lived in the rainforests of Mesoamerica beginning around 3,000 years ago. In this essay I'll be discussing all of the achievements and what made them remarkable, these will be judged as scale, genius, effort, and significance. The Maya had several remarkable achievements which included their trade network, a number system, calendars, and building cities. All are noteworthy however, the way that the Maya built their cities was the most remarkable of all.
There are two type of families. There is one family that speak only English and the other one that speak their home language and English in their household. Those type of families that speak two or more languages in their household are mostly immigrants that move to the United States. Their child or children will grow up speaking perfect English while their parents will speak poor English. In Amy Tan “Mother Tongue”, she talks about how without proper English it is sometimes difficult to get through daily life.
Numerous stories are heart retching and devastating. Trying to imagine being in the shoes of those immigrants is almost impossible, as I have been blessed with a wonderful problem-free life. Unfortunately, I am unable to even relate to any of the several issues immigrants encountered daily, as I have never experienced anything they have suffered through. Although, I personally cannot attest to such horrible experiences, I can promote acceptance and equality among immigrants in America. Similarly, a quote by Carlos Ramirez suggests the same.
I’ve always heard the slogan “work hard and play by the rules and you’ll be given a fair chance to the American Dream”, which in part, draws people to come to this Great Nation. The dream to live in the free land, the land where you can practice whichever religion or no religion and overall live a better life. The responsibilities that immigrants have in assimilating to American culture would have to be is to learn the language and to follow the rule of law. Learning the language is such an important factor for Immigrants, knowing how communicate with your boss, ordering food and for one to be a part of the community. As seen in the film; the younger members of Thao’s family know the language and the older members don’t fully manage the language.
The Maya have created many achievements consisting of many different topics. The Mayans are located in central America or Mesoamerica. Their population was estimated to be around tens of thousands of people. They are known for their trade routes, architectures, system of mathematics and the calendar. To become know for many things it takes great time,money,effort,resources, and people.
The Mayan were very creative, self sustaining, and knowledgeable. These reasons are why I believe their greatest achievement was art. The Mayans created a very rich culture, helping explain the art they created. For these and many other reasons, the greatest achievement of the Maya was art.
Men often got married at around the age of 20 and Women much younger at 14 and it was arranged by the village matchmaker. Development and Achievements The Mayan civilization originated from The Olmec jungles in Mexico around 2000 BC. Their people were farmers, unlike the majority of the population who were hunters and gatherers. They started developing their own building system, cities, language, religion, and even their own calendar system.
One of the toughest adjustments, having been born to Mexican parents, is migrating to an unknown country where traditions and languages differ from one 's own. Though many pursue an education and strive for a better life, the purpose behind an immigrant, like myself, differs from the typical American. Immigrants strive for a life that was once impossible, going to school is not only to attain an education, but to better prove that we can also become successful regardless of our traditions and skin color. I lived in a country for over fifteen years, fearing deportation, not only losing a home, but potentially saying goodbye to a bright future. Although many feel empathy for Mexican-Americans, it is undeniably difficult to truly comprehend the immense trauma children and even adults undergo upon experiencing racism and prejudice.

Although the preservation of culture is important, English proficiency is beneficial to an immigrant; it allows for more opportunities to integrate socially and gives the immigrant a stronger sense of belonging and loyalty.
