Mayo Clinic is a prime example of an establishment with strong cultural values. They communicate these values throughout their staff, doctors, and even relay them to their patients in various ways. Trenholm discusses how we can begin to understand the way organizations are made sense of, which includes the Mayo Clinic. She defines a common culture as “a collection of people [who] share common understandings, values, and perceptions” (217). On almost every pamphlet, every email, and every webpage about the Mayo Clinic, it is very likely to come across their core value, “The needs of the patient come first” (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research). This primary value drives every aspect of the Mayo Clinic. The dress code, the mannerisms of the staff, and the strong morals of the Mayo Clinic come together to create this incredibly professional atmosphere. Because they do not waiver in these morals, such as compassion and respect, they have become a well-known and trustworthy medical facility. These are the reasons the Mayo Clinic has expanded to such great lengths, and become such a medical super power. The patients know they will be treated with integrity and respect no matter their circumstances, and that is a very comforting fact. All of these values shine through in so many ways and allow for Mayo Clinic’s cultural values to be known to everyone who comes into contact with the organization. Through their outstanding staff, morals, and professionalism, each and every patient knows that they are a priority.
