The Second World War was one of the biggest wars that the United States was forced to participate in. Times of war may cause division and turmoil for a nation. Along with the might of our armed forces and industry, our nation succeeded in winning because President Franklin D. Roosevelt unified our nation. He accomplished this uneasy task using the media, providing everyone with a task, and strengthening the nation’s patriotism. Franklin Roosevelt used the media during World War II in many ways.
The government told newspapers, magazines, TV networks, etc., to publish content specifically targeted to women to recruit them to the workforce. In 1943, a pamphlet called “Women At Work” planted the fear of quote on quote “civilian life breaking down” due to lack of people doing everyday jobs (“Rosie the Riveter: Real Women Workers in World War Two”). Jobs such as elevator operators, newspaper deliverers, nurses, etc. The pamphlet sold unbelievably well, mainly due to the fact that that fear was not an irrational one, but one that was grounded on evidence from the past. World War Two happened roughly soon after the Great Depression, where unemployment percentages raised and the stock market collapsed.
During the War many things had to change in order for the country to survive and function. With so many of the able bodied men off fighting in the war women had to take things into their own hands in order to get things done and many of them did. Many women with their husbands and family members gone to help provide for their family and assist the war effort worked in war factories and did other jobs that were usually viewed as just for men. The jobs that many women took
With most of the men at war women had to fill their shoes at home. They took factory and industrial jobs. Women took a giant leap and tackled the work force. Society called these jobs war jobs. This let women know that when the men returned home from war that the men would return to their jobs and the women would have to go back to being the homemaker.
Shortly after the men started leaving to go into war women began to break away from their traditional house roles. Due to the men leaving for the war, the work force started to decrease. Women began to fill mens shoes in jobs such as bank clerks, ticket sellers, chauffeurs, elevator operators, etc. as a result. Labor Unions were adamant that women not work in the factories.
One hundred years ago nobody heard about the news or current events from Facebook or the newest tweet. Until fairly recently the most up to date news had to be heard through the grapevine or read in a newspaper. Since the creation of the internet and the mass media that comes with it, information can now be spread all the way across the world in the time it takes to hit the enter button on a computer or phone and upload it to the internet. Some people think that this is a bad thing because so many things that are uploaded can be either false information or simply information that is misleading and could teach individuals the wrong thing. In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, he discusses the “dangers” of television and elaborates his thoughts about how that specific media was affecting American society. Some of the main points Postman touched on can be compared to the modern media society has now. Postman elaborated that television gained control of American society, which meant that Americans stopped questioning the media and opened the opportunity for fake news to be spread. Americans didn’t know what was real and what was fake because, at the end of the day, everything was for entertainment purposes as Postman expresses. The most important topic he covered was that the media was becoming a curriculum where Americans gained their knowledge and ideals.
Therefore, women had a huge impact on the economy and stability of the country during World War 2. To begin with, the stability of America in the start of the war was scary. The lack of men working depleted the amount of goods and funds coming into households. This forced the government to let women into the workforce to replace men for the time being. However, this caused many issues including business owners being sexist and equal pay being argued.
This opened so many possibilities for women because now their voice can be heard. While women have always worked either as a housewife or in the field, it was not until World War II that many women started to begin careers. Pop culture during World War II was greatly influenced for the better and for the worse. WWII caused much of America to conserve their resources and efforts for the war, instead of spending money, time and their resources on leisure time. While some leisure activities were hurting during wartime, certain activities actually benefitted from WWII.
