1. In the countries throughout Europe, the people just wanted to protect their homes. There was also somewhat of a check and balances system that meant each nation was reluctant to upset the balance of power, but any upset would soon lead to war. At the forefront, Germany declared war on Russia and France. Soon after, Great Britain declared war on Germany and Austria- Hungry. This was the beginning of world war I. There were a few main causes that lead to the start of world war I, the first one being mutual defense alliances. This meant that if one country was attacked, then all their allies in war would unite behind them. This also meant that many countries kept getting pulled into battle, creating chaos. Another factor that lead to war was imperialism, which increased power to countries that brought additional territories under their control. The last straw that lead to the war, was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. The assassin was from a group called the black hand who wanted to make an example of Serbia and declare war. 2. World war I was considered to be the first modern war for many reasons. Each country had their own war tactics and throughout the war they kept coming up with new modern equipment to take down the enemies. When one piece of equipment was overpowered, another was created for war. Such as machine guns, cannons, tanks, flame throwers, poison gas and chemical weapons. Another technique that was used was the addition of air combat into battle. People added machine gun weapons to airplanes for war. This was the first time flight was ever introduced into war.
