Body image is one of the most important things about one’s self. American men and women have obtained this certain body image that they think they need to achieve. For women it may be skinny with the right amount of curves, blonde, and beautiful. For men it may be wealthy, tanned skin, and muscular. Men and women, young and old, all have their own image of body. Body images are so important in today’s society and it is scary to think about. Society needs to stop creating these unrealistic body images. There is almost no escape from body image. We are living in an era where obsessing over what we look like is a daily activity. Media is altering body image and leading girls to believe things that are not even true. If someone were to flip through their commercials or go on any social media site, they would see gorgeous unhealthy looking women. These gorgeous women lead healthy, young girls to believe that they need to alter the way they look. They feel like they need to look just like these women in order to be noticed. The media portrays such a negative reality of body image. Some girls may even look in a mirror in disgust because of what they see. After girls examine all these gorgeous models, they start to examine their own body to that of the model. When girls see that they are not as skinny or as tall as the model, their self-esteem starts to lower. According to “I Am Beautiful”, a program created to help girls with low self-esteem issues, “girls with low self-esteem are most likely to suffer from depression, consider or attempt suicide, or be more willing to engage in unhealthy sexual activity.” It is horrible that girls even have to go through something like considering suicide because they think their body is not good
