The lecture on media’s portrayal of women surely is right about the three big buts gave as the primary message about women’s worth and power. The messages “you’re beautiful but you need help”,” you’re powerful but only as long as you’re submissive” and “you’re worthwhile but only your outside matters” all I have seen in the media. The first message “ you’re beautiful but you need help” is usually featured in beauty related commercials. For example, in ads for hair, the message is always changed your hair color or have straight hair by keeping the freeze always. Women are told that maybe a new hair color will enhance their beauty or it would give them the look they have been dying for. When it comes to women in the media that is the message portrayed. This message is translated into every ad that uses a woman to sell a product. I think this is the message that most women see when they watch the media because on the media shows are a group of women that has been artificially dressed in something that does not represent what she is as a person.
In all honesty, these messages have impacted me in thinking that my natural beauty is not enough and that I have to do extra things to display my self-worth and power. As a young woman, I sometimes feel self-conscious when I see to the extent in which other women have gone to enhance their self. To me, there is a number of women who constantly making sure that their outwards appearance mimics that of the media. Seeing that makes me feel guilty because I am doing the minimal compared to them.
In terms of my friends, I can see it has really impacted them. My most of my female friends are all about wearing make-up on a daily basis. They put on the full makeup, foundations, mascara, lipsticks and countering their faces. They wear more provocative clothing outside and they look for the next best thing to enhance their beauty. Because of these messages, I have noticed women spend more on material things in order to be considered beautiful. Most of the products being sold to women are a little pricey. Another effect is that there has been an increase in the number of eating disorder that I hear about. For example, famous celebrities and models have been known to have an eating disorder even with the amount of wealth and influence they have. I think the reason for this because they are constantly trying to innovate themselves since they are in the public eye. And sadly, one of the effects is low self-esteem. Low self-esteem has been common in most women because of the expectations that have been put on them by the media.
