Module 1 Q2 Medical Examiner and Coroners My Perception of the differences between a medical examiner and a Coroner charged significantly after reading about them in the book. Originally after watch lots of Law and Order,I thought they were the same thing just different titles, I learned coroners are usually elected and are not required to be physicians. If an autopsy is needed, a coroner will frequently consult with a pathologist or forensic pathologist. Medical examiners, in most cases are appointed and must be physicians. Medical examiners perform autopsies for coroners. In my jurisdiction we have a medical examiner the district chief medical examiner is M. Bell, M.D. In the state of Florida we have medical examiner instead of coroners.
