Altruism, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others.” Many organizations such as the National Honor Society, as well as other charitable organizations similar but not limited to the Salvation Army and Feed My Starving Children, work in the spirit of altruism in order to ameliorate the conditions of our community. Individuals such as myself can attempt on their own to help improve their communities, and I would like to attempt to do so not only by volunteering in my own community, but also by pursuing a career in the medical field. Currently, I attempt to be as involved in my community as I am possibly able to, and I owe my successes to organizations such as the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, as I am a member of both. Surgeons are some of the most altruistic people I can think of, since they perform life-saving procedures on a daily basis to repair our loved ones and send them back to us healthier than when they left. I’ve wanted to be a doctor from a very young age, and it is only due to time and a greater appreciation for their ministrations that my love for the profession has grown fonder. Completing my education as a medical student and eventually being able to drastically help others on a daily basis is a dream of mine that can only be quenched by it becoming a reality. While volunteering now with organizations has helped me feel like a beneficial member of society, I long for a day where I can accomplish my dreams and become someone who is not only successful, but who can hold the life of another individual in their hands and do good with
