Louisiana has a small number of medical schools compared to the rest of the states, in which two out of three medical schools are in New Orleans. The two medical schools are directly across the street from another. To fix the problem of over populated medical schools in Louisiana, Louisiana State University should build a new medical school in Baton Rouge to take the place of the old one in New Orleans. A new medical school should be built to accommodate the pre-medicine students in Louisiana and give them a larger variety of opportunities. Having two medical schools in one city is not convenient for the pre medicine students who live in Louisiana. Tulane University is one of three medical schools in Louisiana, and is located in New Orleans. Louisiana State University medical school is located within walking distance of Tulane. These colleges and universities include: LSU, Southern, and Our Lady of the Lake. All three of these schools have a pre human medicine program. The only problem for students in these programs is that they will have to move to a different city when they graduate to finish their medical training. Medical School is something that requires a lot of time, money, and effort. Paul Bodline (2015), stated, “It’s no secret that medical school is expensive. In 2013–14, the annual tuition and fees for public medical schools averaged $31,783 for in-state residents and $55,294 for non-resident” (p.1). Due to this high tuition fee, moving may not be an option for many students because they can hardly afford tuition cost let alone moving costs. Some students may not have the financial stability to move across the state, which is why the medical schools in Louisiana should be farther distances apart.
