The Middle Ages were a time where kings and nobles owned the land and serfs worked with little pay. Serfs were like slaves that worked on a farm (Doc. 1). They got one day to farm for themselves and the other six they were working for their king or noble (OI). Nobles and kings had knights called vassals (OI). Vassals were knights who protected and served kings and nobles in exchange for land (OI).
The castles, the kings and queens, and the gallant knights most of us would like to live in that time of knights and princesses, but there are many downsides. The Black Plague, the widespread poverty, and the fact that the majority of the population was uneducated were all major flaws in this time. Would you really want to live in Medieval Europe? Doctors tried unsuccessfully to get rid of the illnesses around them. They had no books to read or books from other doctors they only used trial and error with their patients.
The Middle Ages was a dark time period. It was dark because education and culture were beginning to decline drastically. This is evident in document #1. As it states,”Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts, and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization”. This detail demonstrates that the decline in education caused the civilizations to not reach their best potential and education began to become really rare to find as it was only accessible/available in Churches.
The Middle Ages was a period that lasted from about 500 to 1500(OI). There were kings and queens, nobles, knights, and peasants (Doc. 1). People were treated and respected differently according to their class(OI). There were special relationships and responsibilities that everyone had. In the Middle Ages feudalism affected people’s lives economically, socially, and politically.
The Medieval Ages were a time where many things like romance, art, music, poetry, disease and death all thrived. Everyone in this time period had a different point of view on it. Some thought it was a golden age, some thought it was an age of feudalism, and some also thought it was a dark age. Yes, this time may have had its ups, but it also had many, many downs. Its darkest times consisted of Barbarian invasions, death, and wars.
After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE, it led into the Middle Ages. Commonly referred as the Dark Age, Europe was in a time of reformation. Many have used the “Dark Age” as a synonym for the Middle Ages, due to the lack of education and unethical actions that occurred during 500 CE to 1500 CE. The Middle Ages weren’t so dark as it seemed, it was a duration of reconstruction, acquired learning, agricultural boom, technology improvements and architecture.
In Crusader Castles, Hugh Kennedy takes a strong approach that Crusader Castles are the pinnacle 12th and 13th century engineering. He explains that European castles which are often garrison by a local lord or vassal did not have to be built to the highest stand, unlike their counterparts to the east who would have to be built to perfection of the highest standard. They needed to be able to withstand brutal assaults from siege weaponry and armies ranking in the tens of thousands much more frequently than anywhere in Europe. Kennedy’s book is useful because it divides the crusaders castles into discrete areas and fits them into context of history and the part that they play in them. Something interesting that I have not commonly seen in other sources is his chapter on siege warfare and how it developed throughout the crusade.
The medieval times lasted from the 6th century to the 16th century. The medieval era wasn 't a pleasant time for people to be alive as it was a time were punishments and trials were really harsh and dangerous. During this time, it was easy for people to commit a crime. Crimes that are now seen as something insignificant were perceived as a horrible offence such as sleeping on the streets and talking behind peoples back. The society in the medieval times were organized by the feudal System.
Concentric castles may have good defense but by far are the worst castles to have. One of the reasons on why they are the worst is the building time. It would take so long that the castle may not be needed anymore or the buyer may die. Another reason is that they are extremely expensive and only the richest people can afford them. These castles are also very expensive to maintain because of the castle being cold and leaky sometimes.
The castle discloses itself to a certain few and will
The Middle Ages consisted of Feudalism and was protected by the ownership/military that supports the members of society who did not have very much power. The Feudal society was linked to Serfs who was thought of, as the lowest end of the spectrum, was contributed to no more than slavery and was stranded to the land for life. The serfs who were agricultural laborers and under the feudal system, had to work on the estate to do physical work for the manor and would be confined to the land for the rest of their lives. They were not even permitted to marry without the permission of the lord. The fall of Rome began in the early middle Ages.
They could defend from attacks and even prepare to launch attacks from their own castles. These castles were originally made of timber and wood. Later on they were replaced with stone to be stronger. Castles were sometimes built on hills but, most of the time they were built in the best place for defence. After the middle ages castles weren't built as much.
Knights, castles, warfare is one way to describe the way of the Middle Ages of Europe. During the Middle Ages many wars like the Crusades I, II, III, and IIII were some of biggest wars and most famous that happened in Europe’s history along with the black Death being the biggest disease at the time. These events happened in Jerusalem, France, Damascus, Syria, Israel, Istanbul, and Turkey on November 18th, 1096-1099, 1147-1149, and 1189-1192. Many people died during these events, but also many other people grew like Richard the lionheart. Also many artistic items like certain buildings are still standing in Europe today that have led to more artistic creations.
There were also knights who would defend the castle against attackers. People in the castle, especially the nobles in the keep, were very wealthy. In the Middle Ages, the wealthy wore brighter colors, wore clothes from better materials, and had long jackets. The clothing was made from materials like
The King was ultimately responsible for protecting all that he ruled over, and was at the top of the Feudal hierarchy. His word was considered divine and absolute. Because the King could not be everywhere at once, he would bequeath land to “tenants in chief”, typically Bishops, Barons, or other nobility. These tenants in chief would be granted a large section of land which they could then subdivide amongst their knights and other minor nobles. The minor nobles would then establish villages upon their land comprised of families of serfs or
