MEMBERSHIP Policy VIII. Membership. Section 1. Classifications. (See Fraternity Bylaws, Article III., Section 3.) A. Active. An active member is a collegian who has been initiated regardless of the number of hours being taken unless she has previously achieved alumna status or been granted Associate Membership. B. Associate Member. Associate Membership may be granted to an active member in good standing who, due to extraordinary circumstances, finds she cannot participate in the regular requirements of her chapter. Associate Membership is rarely granted and each case shall be approved by both Advisory Board and the District Director. The Membership Specialist may grant associate status for an affiliated active member for special circumstances. Section 2. Initiation. (See Fraternity Bylaws, Article III., Section 4., B., and Section 5.) A. Badge. (See Fraternity Bylaws, Article III., Section 5., A., 2.) Provisions for securing a badge shall be made before Initiation. B. Blindfolds. The use of blindfolds during any service of Initiation is prohibited. C. New Members. Chapters are expected to initiate all new members during the same term they are pledged to membership. Chapters may petition the Ritual and History Specialist, who, in consultation with the Ritual and History Director, may grant an exception. New members have one calendar year from the day of Formal Pledging to be initiated. D. Reports. (See Fraternity Bylaws, Article III., Section 5., C.) Section 3. Selection. Because of familial loyalty to the Fraternity, legacies shall be given careful and thoughtful consideration by the chapter. 1. Every chapter shall establish a legacy rule. 2. Legacies shall be voted upon at a time determined by the individual chapter and after members have had an opportunity to meet the legacy. 3. Following the legacy vote, their names should not be included on flex lists. 4. If a legacy is invited to preference round, her name must be included at the top of the bid list. 5. To protect a legacy’s privacy, chapters are not expected to notify a legacy’s closest Kappa relative if the legacy is not invited to a recruitment event or extended a bid. H. Men.
