A Midsummer Night’s Dream Paragraph Doaa Musleh Men in A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, the men act as if they are superior towards women, Shakespeare portrays this through the empowerment men have to the women when they force them to marry. In Athens the law forces all women to obey their fathers and to follow all their commands. They think women do not deserve respect and revoke their rights of choice. First, Egeus forced Hermia to marry Demetrius because he did not trust her judgment. In the opening act, he complains about her to Theseus, and he pointed at Demetrius, whom he wants her to marry, he says, “Full of vexation come I with complaint / Against my child...This man hath my consent to marry her” (1.1.22-25). He thinks that she is immature and Lysander has tricked her into falling in love with him by giving her poems, rings, and bracelets. Second, the inequitable law of Athens force all women to obey their fathers. For example, when Theseus warns Hermia that she should obey her father, Theseus says, “Fit your fancies to your father’s will. / Or else the law of Athens yields you up” (1.1.118-119). The duke did not care about Hermia’s feelings, he follows the law, which means that the unfair law gives all fathers the ability to control their daughter's life not only Egeus. This means it’s made by a man who feels that the women are objects to control. When the father or the husband make decisions the women are enforced to do it no matter what. Finally, Demetrius feels it is okay if he uses offensive language with Helena as long he does not love her. For example, when he tries to make her
