Anna Smith Strong was the first female American spy. She was a member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring of Setauket, New York. The work of the Culper Spy Ring was crucial to intercepting information from the British commanders in New York. By distributing this purloined information to the American leaders in the Revolutionary War, it gave the Patriots an advantage by removing the element of surprise regarding the enemy’s impending attacks and troop movements. Anna Smith married Selah Strong in November of 1760.

Women are viewed as fragile and delicate, but strong enough to keep a house clean, kids in line and a happy husband. Women are expected to be stay at home moms and depend on their husbands for everything while having no opinions of their own. However, there are women who have overlooked those expectations and proved that women are capable of doing anything. Deborah Sampson and Elizabeth Van Lew are just two women who have helped break the norms of women’s roles in society. Sampson’s impressive braveness and loyalty to fight for her country against all odds have proved that women are capable to endure harsh horrors.

Both articles display oppression of woman due to stereotypes and the culture effecting environment phenomenon. “Reinventing the veil” is an article that shares an insight into the author’s perspective on hijabs and a brief discussion on hijabs over time and what they represent to Muslim woman. The article “Why woman aren’t advancing at workplace” attempts to look at how transgendered people might serve as a medium, to understand the glass ceiling effect and the obstacles woman face at the workplace. These articles share many similarities and will be discussed in this essay.
Women, following this ruling, would continue to be placed in lower jobs than men on the basis that they were not interested in it and had different values than men. This argument was accepted without any disagreement, continuing the long held stereotypes of women. Stereotypes of women were used as a justification for not allowing women to be placed in jobs that are normally dominated by men. These personal characteristics also seemed to be expected for all women. All women were perceived to fall under the umbrella of not wanting to take jobs that involved competitiveness, risky salary, and deterred from the normal working hours.
