Shackled is a suspenseful and thrilling novel written by novelist Tom Leveen. The story centers on sixteen year old Pelly, who was traumatized by the kidnapping of her friend Tara years ago at a mall. After multiple therapy sessions, medications, and mental treatments, Pelly feels like she can return back to her normal life and live like a normal teenage girl. Just as she´s ready to step out into the real world once more, her life takes an unexpected three hundred sixty degree turn. One morning, as she´s working at a local cafe shop, an odd man and young, timid girl walk in.
Craig Haney’s article Mental Health Issues in Long-Term Solitary and “Supermax” Confinement illustrates the complications faced in solitary confinement emphasizing the rise in mental health challenges imposed. Particular attention is paid to the escalation in the nature of mental health-related issues, including the negative psychological effects of imprisonment. Haney discusses these increasingly widespread and specialized units that bring forward the issues presented taking into account the notion of isolation and the association of the high percentage of prisoners suffering from mental illnesses. Contraband in correctional facilities is a security risk for administrators. Jails in Correctional Facilities routinely has a wide range of security procedures. While Contraband is increasingly Rising, staff members and inmates are at risk. New policies need to be implemented to reduce contraband. For Example, when inmates are searched leaving in or out the building, the guards should also be searched.
Ms. Augustin Doreus has also been very active in the following hospital committees such as: Restraint, Safety, Fall, ConED, and Performance Improvement. Furthermore, she has been a voice for the veterans focusing on changing the culture of how restraints are being used in the organization. She advocates on focusing more on alternative measures such as, de-escalation techniques, therapeutic communication, recognized early sing of agitation, and intervene on a timely manner, and so on. Outcome: As a member of the Hospital Restraint Committee and the leader of the Sub-restraint committee, Mrs. Augustin Doreus proposition to the Restraint Committee was to change the philosophy of our current restraint practice to focus more on finding alternative ways to keep our veterans safe during behavioral outburst.

Solitary confinement is the practice of confining a person that is incarcerated to a small cell for around twenty-two to twenty-three hours of the day without any social contact. The problem with solitary confinement is that it is either being done to someone that is weak minded or to someone for an extended period of time.
This is more in reference to solitary confinement or isolation within our juvenile detention centers which has been proven to have damaging effects on children. There are so many mentally ill people in correctional facilities because most families do not know how to help their loves ones who suffer from a mental illness, so the call the police for help. Majority of the police officers do not know what to do or how to handle people with a mental illness disease. Police officers who are not trained to deal with the mentally ill often do not recognize that person is ill. Some police officers do not recognize if the individual should or not go to jail or a treatment center or medical facility. The impact of law enforcement and the judicial system dealing with people with a mental illness is to assist the inmates with the help they need.
Around 250,000 children are tried sentenced or incarcerated as adults every year in the united states. In just Mercy by Brian Stevenson, Ian gets sentenced to an adult prison and experiences the horrible events that occur in them. Ian did do bad things, but making a child suffer and grow up in an adult facility while being tormented needs to change. Although Ian has messed up and broken the law, children being incarcerated in adult prisons, and being held in solitary confinement, can only lead to negative effects.
The author presented good points when it comes to the issues with placing juveniles in secure confinement. When placing these juveniles into confined locations it can sometimes set them up for failure and the chance of rehabilitation is slim to none. In the text it mentions issues these kids face by being in a secure facility, the issues consists of not being properly handled to due undertrained staff , not having enough staff to monitor the kids, and keeping the kids away from the adult offenders if they are placed in that type of facility. These issues and others have been known to cause depression, suicide/suicide attempts, rape, and other horrible things to happen to the kids.
Physical and mechanical restraint can be similarly defined to be “Any device or individual that confines or restricts movement,” whereas chemical restraint is defined to be “Any drug that is used… to either control behavior or to restrict the patient’s freedom of movement that is not typically administered… as being prescribed for a medical treatment or psychiatric condition” (Fryer 27). Clearly, there is a stark difference between the physical and mechanical restraint uses as compared to the chemical, for many would consider injecting an adolescent with a medication that they are not prescribed for as being unlawful. Seclusion of a patient involves confining a patient, voluntarily or involuntarily, to a set space or location without any social interaction, but sometimes the patient is adamant and refuses to adhere to the order.
After reading the article, I do agree that juveniles should be segregate from the adult prison for protection. However, I don 't agree with the solitary confinement and being restrained in small spaces. Most of these juvenile offenders have nonviolent criminal charges. Solitary confinement can cause all kinds of mental and psychological problems for juveniles. There have been cases where juveniles committ suicide while in adult prison because they have experienced physical abuse, mistreatment by staff members and long stays in solitary confinement.
Solitary confinement has been a crucial component of the American prison system since the appearance of jails in the early 1800’s. One main cricsticsm of solitary conferment has been that is causes the inmates increased psychological and sociological distress .Not only that but can in turn make the inmate more violent. The use of solitary confinement is highly profound in supermax prisons .
The treatment of the mentally ill is a problem. Most people who are mentally ill are being mistreated and not receiving proper treatment, whether it be in mental institutions, prisons, and even in general society. There is no excuse for this mistreatment of the mentally ill, but there might be an explanation. The explanation is that many people do not understand the mentality of those who are not sound of mind. People do not see them as actually ill, as they would someone who has a physical disease.
