Mental illnesses have a high prevalence amongst the United States population. Each year, tens of millions of individuals suffer and are affected by mental illnesses (National Institute of Mental Health, 1). These illnesses range from anxiety disorder, eating disorders, major depression, personality disorder, and many more. Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions. They are disorders that affect how a person thinks, feels and acts. The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick shows the background of someone living with a mental illness. This book distributes and humanizes what Quick describes as the “mental health community”. I also commend her for choosing to write her paper on this topic. There tends to be an unfair stigma associated with any kind of mental illness. I’m sure that Katlyn might have been a little fearful about talking about her problems in front of classmates who could potentially judge her for her struggles. However, I think that college students tend to be more accepting of people who struggle with anxiety and depression because many of us have struggled with some form of these issues throughout our college careers.
Lennie and Sam live very different lives. However, they both face similar problems because of their illnesses. Having an illness can greatly affect a persons life and mental illness is no different. Like most illnesses, symptoms differ with each person and having support from family can greatly improve someone’s health. As a member of society, one is expected to relate to others in a mutually understandable ways and be able to engage in the day-to-day obligations and roles. However, such expectations exceed the person’s physical as well as psychological capacities that may hinder them from presenting themselves conventionally and to act as they want and have to (GERMOV). Hence, society may see them as differing from norm and can be perceived as being mentally ill as illustrated by Psychiatrist Thomas Szasz in his influential book The Myth of Mental Illness (Perone, 2014). Moreover, from a sociological theorist perspective Talcott Parsons, illness is viewed as form of deviance and described illness from a sociological terms as failing in some way to fulfil

The authors begin by providing a foundation of statistics of mental illness on college campuses. Collins and Mowbray’s study obtained a sample containing counselling directors from 587 United States schools. Participants were given an eight page survey evaluating the level of mental illness education on their campus. The quality of the services provided on their campuses was also taken into account. Collins and Mowbray’s results show that the treatment and opportunities of those with mental illness are gradually improving, however, the education of mental illness is still lacking on college campuses.
Have you ever noticed a family member or a friend acting strange or different? They might be suffering from a mental illness, but they are too scared to tell you because of how you might react or they just don't know they have a mental illness. Most of the time people might be so sad and alone they won't even try to get help. However, people should know that many times mental illness is caused by their environment and thoughts. According to Lisa Pederson, “we need to start thinking about mental health just like we think about physical illness.”

While growing up I had difficulties with my self confidence which later manifested itself into anxiety.
