Millions are suffering because of the government’s negligence
The government should increase spending to help people with mental illness. Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or behavior or a combination of these (“What is”). Most mentally ill patients don't even realize there is a problem with them and for those who do they tend to feel like they are alone and have nowhere to go. Mental illnesses are associated with distress and or problems functioning in social, work or family activities (“What is”). Mental health is the foundation for thinking, communication, learning, resilience and self-esteem (“what is”).
People don't realize that there is a major problem rizeing with people discovering that they have mental illnesses. Almost 1 in 5 adults in the U.S which is about 43.8 million, or 18.5% experience mental illness in a given year (“NAMI”). Over one-third (37%) of students with a mental health condition age 14­–21 and older who are served by special education dropout (“NAMI”). Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S.,20 the 3rd leading cause of death for people aged 10–24 and the 1st leading cause of death for people aged 15–24 (“NAMI”). More than 90% of children who die by suicide have a mental health condition and each day an estimated 18-22 veterans die by suicide (“NAMI”).Adults in the U.S. living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than others, largely due to treatable medical conditions (“NAMI”). Approximately 20% of state prisoners have a mental illness condition (“NAMI”). 70% of youth in juvenile justice systems have at least one mental health condition and at least 20% live with a serious mental illness
