Romeo And Juliet: The True Character Of Mercutio Romeo and Juliet is a famous tragedy play known all around the world, but the reason it became a tragedy is because Mercutio, the best friend of Romeo, is slain at the hands of Romeo’s newlywed wife’s cousin, Tybalt. This is what led to the real tragedy of the play “Romeo And Juliet” written by William Shakespeare. The death of Mercutio was the start of the tragedy, and this shows how influential Mercutio was as a character in the storyline of Romeo and Juliet. In the book Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare shows that Mercutio is a versatile character in showing both loyalty, humour, friendship, and most importantly became one of the starting points of tragedy. Before the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt, Mercutio states "Will you pluck your sword out of his pilcher by the ears? Make a haste of it." ( Shakespeare 3.1. 81-83) which shows the loyalty and seriousness of Mercutio. Shakespeare uses narrative technique to help image Mercutio defending Romeo from Tybalt. This shows his loyalty to Romeo and the Montagues but more importantly, shows how deep his friendship is with Romeo. This shows the character of Mercutio and how significant he is to Romeo, which makes him more important for the play and how tragic it will be for Romeo once he is gone.
