Smartphones Can Wait Many people today commonly dismiss the fact that children in middle school should not have smart phones. I happen to sympathize with those who believe pre-teens should not have phones, though, perhaps because I did not receive a smart phone until high school. Even without a smart phone in middle school I felt perfectly happy using other things to learn and entertain myself. Children could contently experience life through the physical world rather than through a phone screen if parents withheld phones until a later age. Many people say that students learn best through technology and it prepares them for their future outside of school. While students can learn using technology, they should not soley depend on it for knowledge.These pre-teens still need to engage in active learning instead of studying it through their phone. For example, instead of learning the parts of a plant through research on the internet, the students should experience it by looking through textbooks or dissecting actual plants. Not only do cell phones take away from kinesthetic learning, but it also creates an attachement problem as they can receive the information they require immediately. During class, the pre-teens easily become bored because they would rather do their research online to find the results faster. This attachement continues to increase the older they get, therefore reducing their excitement for learning through physical practice. Smart phones at a young age can lead to greater attachment to the device, less “real world” experiences, unguarded content, and cyber-bullying. As students get to use smartphones they stop wanting to explore and learn through their own experiences. Many middle school students would rather spend their time look something up than witness it, which leads to attachment problems. Unhealthy cell phone reliance leads to kids spending time on their phones instead of engaging with their families. Families have less influence on their students if they let the kids have complete freedom with the phones. Giving pre-teens phones includes the problem of the absence of parental control on what the students see or do. Having access to the internet and social media can also lead to cyber-bullying, something a child should never experience, especially at that age. Parents could resolve most of these problems if they withheld smart phones from their children until they grew older. People say students need phones in middle school, when in reality smartphones can
