While attending this film studies class I watched two films, one being Midnight Cowboy. Midnight Cowboy is about a Texas cowboy named Joe Buck. Joe travels to New York to make money as a hustler. While in New York, he makes a friend named Ratso. Ratso lets Joe stay in his abandoned apartment with him until Ratso gets sick. The other film I watched was Precious. Precious is a girl living under her abusive mother's roof. In the movie she is expecting her second child, where she was raped by her father. Along the way she finds out that her father gave her HIV. While trying to be a mother she, is attending an alternative school to get her GED. At the end of the movie Precious starts a happy life with her children without her abusive mother. Poverty is lack or money or poorness. Poverty can be caused from laziness, lack of opportunity in the region, education and health. Poverty is exposed in Midnight Cowboy and Precious. You can see that poverty is expressed in the films by the home's, street life, lack of healthcare and welfare. In Midnight Cowboy you can tell that Joe and Ratso live in poverty. In Precious, Precious’s mother, Mary is someone that likes to take advantage of government assistance. Mary wants Precious and her children to live with her so that she will receive welfare checks. Mary was selfish and did not want to get a job. In conclusion Precious did not want to end up like her mother so she got an education. In Midnight Cowboy Joe did not want to get a real job instead he just wanted to be a hustler. He could better himself if he got a job instead of being hustler under the table. Being a hustler is illegal and work is not stable. No doubt there are many reasons for living in poverty like lack of opportunities but in some circumstances poverty can be caused from
