In the sixteenth century, the city life (especially the courts ) was playing a vital role in the fate of the people . And because of its great importance, many writers have focused on this theme. Shakespeare used this issue to show some of the humanitarian aspects of people and how a person turns to evil and corruption in order to get fame and power. At the beginning of the play there are the old duke, and his entourage who live in the forest of Arden . The old duke began saying " These words have an irony and it gives an idea of the contrast of concepts at that time. Court is a noble and elegant place , it is for justice and security. The greatest contradiction is that duke Frederick’s and Oliver’s corruption and evil rule the court . While the good people such as the old duke, Rosalind and Orlando live in the forest. Another comparison is in use music . In the forest there are songs more than in the city . There are differences in language. Court people speak in verse form ., while country people speak in prose form . Which can be clearly seen in the scene when Oliver tried to take food from the old duke and his entourage . Oliver used rough and tough style of speaking because he was thought that the villagers speak this way. Women are also more open , active and free in the forest than the women in the city. Women in the forest express their feelings freely and they act simply. Differences in appearance are also clear. People in the forest dressed normally and were perhaps not well-groomed . On the contrary people from the city are interested in style and perfection in their appearance . Also the attitude of the characters is different. There is the old duke, who prefers life in the forest to that in the city. Rosalind , Cilia and Orlando considered that the forest journey is enjoyable.
