In modern culture, there are a lot of trends that are set by people of higher status. Individuals such as athletes, musicians, artists, models, and other influential people often start trends and fads. One diet fad that has been around for several years is the gluten-free diet that many celebrities have committed to. Celebrities such as, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus have committed to this diet. However these two celebrities are gluten-free for two different reasons. Miley Cyrus is allergic to gluten and Lady Gaga is gluten-free because she wants to lose weight. Two main types of gluten are gliadin and glutenin, research shows gliadin is the gluten protein that causes negative health effects. Gluten is dangerous for individuals with Celiac disease. The effect of a person consuming gluten with Celiac disease is the damage on the lining of the small intestine. The small intestine is lined with finger-like tissues called villi and microvilli, the structure specifically allows for optimal surface area absorption of nutrients of food. With Celiac disease the gluten causes the villi to flatten therefore ultimately decreasing the surface area and negatively affecting the ability to absorb nutrients.
