Being someone in the military at all times you should know what is expected. One of the expectations that should be known while in uniform and passing a flag that isn’t cased, you salute six paces and hold the salute until your six paces passed the flag. Also if in formation you follow the commands of your squadron commander, when he/she say “Present Arms” that’s when you render the salute until the command of “Order Arms” is heard. Even not being in the military it is still ways you can show respect to the flag by removing your hat when wearing one and placing your right hand over your heart when the flag is six paces from you. For the national anthem if it is at an outdoor event while in uniform you face the flag if the flag is visible and you salute until the music is done playing. If in civilian dress, stand at attention take your hat off with right hand and place it on the left side of your chest. At indoor events you do not salute the flag when in uniform. Other things that should be done to the flag like carrying the flag horizontal , when lowering and raising the flag make sure the flag never touch anything like the floor, ground and water.
