COA2 Informative essay The purpose of this essay is to address the five Army leadership competencies. Throughout, I will focus on the three most critical competencies, and will discuss the importance each brings to national security and our defense posture. For starters, to fight and win our nation's battles, the importance of military leadership cannot be overstated! To achieve victory and superior results, quality leaders require certain skills.
Directional selection and disruptive selection are two of the three types of natural selection. Although both of them result in a population adapting to biotic and abiotic environments, they differ in many ways. Directional selection occurs when one extreme phenotype is favored over the other phenotypes, whereas disruptive selection occurs when two or more phenotypes are favored over the others. Another difference is that disruptive selection favors polymorphism and directional selection causes species to evolve over time and leads to the extinction of those lacking the phenotypes causing the distribution curve to shift.
The difference between a good and bad leader manifests itself in the habits and actions of that leader. Often, a good leader practices virtues that naturally draw others to them while constantly guiding their subordinates through physical and moral hardship. They uplift those around them, ensure the growth of their subordinates, and maintain a healthy climate of dignity and respect. Meanwhile, a bad leader creates a toxic environment, one that may be exclusive, harmful, or demeaning. Bad leaders, such as those observed in The Kunk Gun, Alpha, and Platoon, engage in vices that harm their ability to effectively lead.
After I talk about both forms of leadership I will discuss each quote that was given on the assignment handout. Lastly, I will discuss the questions that have been provided for us to use. Leadership in the Army is the fundamental foundation of the organization. Leaders like Officers and Non- Commission Officers implement and set the standard of leader to soldiers. These leaders ensure the Army soldiers are trained and prepare for any hardships they face. The term Leadership can be defined differently based on the organization in which the term is applied to. In the Army Leadership can be described as a "characterized by a complex mix of organizational, situational, and mission demands on a leader who applies personal qualities, abilities, and experiences to exert influence on the organization, its people, the situation, and the unfolding mission" (ADP 6-22).
Most importantly, since the contents of this course are largely different from what I have learned in my major courses. I regard this as a rare opportunity for me to take on some new challenges, and I would like to take a chance to develop my leadership skills. Before attending this course, “leadership” is a word quite far away from me, and I only have some basic understandings of it. And I found out that most of my thoughts I had about leadership are very different from what it really is.
Military leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Another significant aspect of emphasized by the army is charisma. Therefore, army strategy to have a great leader is to choose people with high charisma since follower are always drawn to leaders with charisma. By having a high charisma they can command the follower easily. The basic task of a leader are: achieve the mission with zero fatality.
