Question 1: Describe an undertaking in which you demonstrated leadership. What circumstances prompted your involvement? How did you go about it? What did you learn from your shortcomings and successes?

Throughout my high school career, I invested a large portion of my extracurricular time into one area: band. It was where I fit in and felt most comfortable. However, as I matured, I realized that even though I could have just fulfilled what was expected of me, I wasn’t content only being concerned about myself. I felt a personal obligation to try and expand my involvement so that I was leading and helping others. As a result, I joined the leadership within the band by becoming an officer. Since this was one of my first encounters with leadership, I had a lot to learn, and one discovery I made was that leading can take on several different forms. I also found that simply leading by example is extremely important. Being someone that others can look up to, particularly for younger members of the band, helps motivate them and set a particular standard for the band. However, as with any leadership position, there were challenges that presented themselves. In this particular situation, the sheer number of members in this organization was a barrier. As a perfectionist, I’m tempted to want complete control over all possible circumstances, micromanaging to making sure that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to, which is simply impossible when you’re dealing with over 200 band members,
